London – where to eat, drink & shop:
Eating & Drinking
Even the choosiest food customers will be happy with London; it has a range of restaurants so vast that even the most obscure of tastes are catered for. There’s some 6000 to 7000 restaurants of all ethnicities in this vast metropolis, but don’t let that overwhelm you – the best thing to do is head down to one of the hotspots and wander through, stopping wherever you fancy.
For a good range of restaurants try heading to Camden, Notting Hill or Upper Street in Islington. For a touch of class, head over to the Kings Road in Chelsea or Kensington High Street, or if you fancy a really vibrant atmosphere then Covent Garden is the place to go.
As for nightlife London is pretty hard to beat. It’s such a big city that you can get whatever you want here, it’s just a case of investigating. Popular drinking spots with tourists include the buzzing Leicester Square area and the trendy Soho quarter, while a trip to the Kings Road will see you mingling with the wealthy young professionals in the many suave, fashionable bars. Again, Upper Street in Islington is a lively spot awash with tourists and good-natured Londoners, while Camden is very popular for its live music pubs and fringe events. If you’re a real night owl you’ll find dance clubs scattered all over the city, just ask around and you’ll find what you want.
Shopping
London is certainly up there with the best as regards to shopping. For the standard shopping experience take yourself straight over to Oxford Street where all the big name stores can be found. There are plenty of designer shops such as Ralph Lauren, Dolce & Gabbana and Gucci located just off Oxford Street on Old Bond Street and New Bond Street, but for the real deal head over to Knightsbridge and wander through Brompton Street and Sloane Square. Here you’ll find the famous Harrods and Harvey Nicholls stores along with a smattering of quaint little boutique shops where you can get the latest in designer goods.
If you’re on a different budget then Camden Market should be your first port of call. This enormous swashbuckling market covers a number of streets and you’ll find some fascinating gear here, just take the time to trawl the stalls and enjoy the colourful ambience. And while you’re in that neck of the woods you’d do well to take a stroll along the charming Camden Lock if the weather’s anyway good – it’s a particularly enchanting slice of old London.
