Albert Memorial

London
The Albert Memorial is situated in Kensington Gardens in the borough of Westminster, directly north of the Royal Albert Hall in the southern boundary of the Park. Standing at 180 feet, this monument should not be missed when visiting London.

Queen Victoria commissioned this memorial in memory of her late husband Prince Albert of SaxeCoburg. The striking monument was designed by Sir George Gilbert Scott and was finally completed in 1876. I think its fair to say that this is one of the greatest Victorian gothic memorials anywhere in the UK.

The statue is of Albert sitting under a canopy, facing south. At each corner of the monument marble figures, which represent Europe, Asia, Africa and America can be seen.

Above this are figures representing the Victorian Arts and Sciences of commerce, agriculture, engineering and manufacture.

The base of the memorial comprises of 187 carved figures depicting celebrated artists reflecting Albert’s enthusiasm for the arts. Bronze angels crown the statue.
